The 2011 SHOP WITH A COP program was a huge success again, thanks to many generous donations, local law enforcement, and volunteer help! Shelby County Fraternal Order of Police was able to help 33 Shelby County children in need this Christmas! With all the donations and help these children will be able to open Christmas gifts of clothes and toys that they would not have been able to receive otherwise! A big THANKS to all that helped and supported this great cause, especially the Shelby County Rockets Boys Basketball team that volunteered to help wrap the presents for the children!

Internet and Phone Scams

Consumers beware of internet and phone scams.  We have received numerous complaints about phone and internet scams, the most recent being a mystery shopper scam.  It involves a request to mystery shop Western Union.  The group, who represents themselves as different companies, will send fraudulent money orders and ask you to deposit them into your account.  After doing so, they tell you to keep your portion and withdraw the remainder to send to different locations via Western Union.  They provide you with names to send the money to and advise that the process will rated upon completion.  The groups originate out of the country and have runners here to pick up the money.  By the time the money order comes back fraudulent, they have moved on and the victim is left to pay back the bank. If anyone requests you to deposit a check or money order and then withdraw a portion to be sent elsewhere, it is more than likely a scam. Another common scam involves being contacted in regards to winning money or gifts.  You are told in order to receive your gift you are required to pay the taxes up front.  Most of the scams originate out of other countries and make it virtually impossible for local Law Enforcement to investigate. We hope that this information is helpful and that consumers protect themselves by verifying any transaction.  Anyone that has been a victim of a recent scam,  we urge you to report the information to the Attorney Gernal Department of Criminal Investigations and the FTC Bureau of Consumer Protection.

Sheriff Mike Armstrong and the Shelby County Sheriff's Office was honored for receiving their accreditation status on August 11th, 2010 at the Kentucky Association of Chiefs of Police annual conference in Bowling Green. The Sheriff’s Office has been working hard over the past year to meet the requirements necessary to become accredited through the K.A.C. P.  and is only the 7th Sheriff’s Office out of 120 in the state of Kentucky to do so. This accreditation means that our agency was carefully measured against an established set of standards and has met or exceeded professionally accepted practices in law enforcement.  We are very proud of this accomplishment and will continue to fulfil our public trust by delivering our services in a professional manner with a service-oriented attitude.

Message from Sheriff Armstrong
As your Sheriff, it has been an honor and a privilege to serve the citizens of Shelby County.  During my Law Enforcement career I have had the privilege to meet many of our great citizens and become involved with them and their individual communities.  I have been a lifelong resident of Shelby County and have always viewed Shelby County as one of the greatest places in Kentucky to live and raise a family.  When I started my Law Enforcement career in 1990 as Chief Deputy of the Shelby County Sheriff Office, I was following in my father’s footsteps; he also was a Deputy Sheriff for Shelby County in the 1970’s.  I knew that the Shelby County Sheriff Office was the Law enforcement agency that I wanted to spend my entire career with. During my first year as Chief Deputy I worked hard for the citizens of Shelby County and was honored by the Kentucky Sheriff’s Association as Kentucky’s Deputy of the year in 1990.  During my career I always had the goal to someday be the Sheriff of Shelby County.  The residents of Shelby County helped me reach that goal in 2002.  Now as your Sheriff it is my commitment to provide the citizens of Shelby County with the best possible Law Enforcement services.  Since being elected as your Sheriff I have provided Shelby County with five additional officers, implemented two detectives for investigations, and provided deputies with advanced technology to help fight crime.  Please feel free to contact me at anytime via phone, email or by dropping by the office.  My door is always open to the public for praise, criticism, or concerns.
